Did You Know?

Did you know – Big Brothers Big Sisters, Diabetes Canada, The Salvation Army, and other organizations rely on your donations to help deliver their important programs and services across Nova Scotia?

Big Brothers Big Sisters, Diabetes Canada, The Salvation Army, and other organizations rely on your donations

As the long cold winter days settle in upon us, and the rush to get ready for the holiday season approaches, let’s think about the bigger meaning of the spirit of giving. Isn’t it about sharing our resources? And Sharing the Joy of what we have with others? Whether we’re baking, writing, sewing, assembling, wrapping, it’s the act of giving that satisfies the soul.

So as you race about, checking things off your list and figuring out the last things you need to do, please pause and think about sharing the joy of giving to many others.
And, if you have too many clothes, hats, scarves, shoes, etc, please consider donating them to our members at one of our donation sites. (Go to our donate page to find out where.) Not only will you help someone who needs these things, but you will help fund one of our important member programs that are critical to Nova Scotians. And, anything you donate will be put to use. If it can’t be sold, then it will be recycled into rags, stuffing, insulation or sold to other markets, and it won’t go into the landfill.

AFTeR members are all involved in the collection, reuse and resale of residential textiles. Our members live and work in Nova Scotia, and they are invested in supporting Nova Scotian people and their communities. Share the Joy across Nova Scotia!

Gratitude

The other day as I walked towards the mall in my neighbourhood, I saw one of our members’ drivers collecting a large load of donations – I felt gratitude for all the generous people who donated their textiles. Big Brothers Big Sisters, Diabetes Canada, IWK Foundation, Salvation Army, and the Breast Cancer Foundation all rely on your donations to help deliver their important programs and services in Nova Scotia.

December is the month of giving. Many of us spend lots of time and money finding the right gift for the special people in our lives. And, it can be draining and unsatisfying to spend so much on items that are wrapped in tons of plastic, boxed and bagged, often packaged in extra wrapping as they’ve been shipped from a warehouse. The impact of that consumption can be seen curbside in the weeks following Christmas. So why not change your focus? Make this a thrift Christmas. More and more people are shopping thrift. It makes sense – not only does it save money, but it helps out the environment and the community. And, when we shop thrift we can often find a more unique, higher quality and hardly worn item to give to our family and friends.

AFTeR is a not for profit Association of members involved in the textile diversion and reuse industry. Our members are all involved in the collection, reuse and resale of residential textiles. Our members live and work in Nova Scotia, and they are invested in supporting Nova Scotian people and their communities. So as you turn your mind towards Christmas and what to do – please consider making it a thrift Christmas.

And, please donate what you don’t need, your used item may be someone else’s treasure. Donate to our members, help our communities and the environment all at the same time – DONATE, DIVERT and DO GOOD!
