Textile Waste a Growing problem

The average Canadian throws away over 80 pounds of textiles every year. In Nova Scotia, that waste will end up in landfills that are expensive to create, maintain, and eventually replace.

It is so easy to change this, and you can do your part today. Organizations throughout Nova Scotia keep used textiles from the landfill by accepting them in charity bins generally found in public locations like the parking lots of shopping centres.

Organizations like Diabetes Canada, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Salvation Army, accept textile donations and use revenue from the recycling of your used clothing and other textile products to fund the important programs they run here in Nova Scotia.

Protect the environment, extend our landfills, and fund important community programs right here at home by donating today.

Just One Thing You Can Do to Save the Planet!

Just One Thing You Can Do to Save the Planet!

Here is One Thing YOU Can Do to Help the Environment

We all want to find the ways we can contribute to the global effort be responsible and improve our treatment of the environment.

The fast fashion industry which has grown to a $96 billion-dollar industry has had a huge influence on society. Many of us now wear clothing for a few seasons and then dispose of it, ready to follow the new trend. And of course our tastes, our bodies and our needs change.

AFTeR members currently help divert 8,000 tonnes of textiles away from landfill and into reuse every year. We want more of those textiles and it can happen with your help!

Much of our clothing is made from polyester or a combination of mixed fibres. Polyester is a petroleum product and doesn’t biodegrade. Yes, just like those plastic bags we are trying to get rid of!

In Nova Scotia we all send about 38,000 tonnes of our waste textiles to our landfills every year even though much of that textile waste can be reused or recycled.

Instead of continuing to send your used clothing to the landfill just take a moment and donate it to AFTeR members (see our donate page). We will make good use of the textiles you no longer use while funding critical programs for Nova Scotians in need.

We all will win!

We all will win!

At a conference recently I heard a phrase which is so appropriate for today
‘If all partners don’t win, it won’t be sustainable’.

Did you know that on average Canadians throw out 81 lbs of textiles every year? Much of these textiles are clothes we have only worn 5 or 6 times. AFTeR members collect textile donations across Nova Scotia, and with the funds raised we support people in the community. Wouldn’t it be better to donate your clothes & textiles to an agency that can reuse or recycle it? And in doing so the funds raised can go to essential programs such as meals at shelters, diabetes research or mentoring youth? That’s what AFTeR members do – we help divert textiles from landfill and towards causes that benefit communities across Nova Scotia.

10% of what is in Nova Scotian landfills is textiles. This is a sad example of our current Take, Make, & Waste economy. This is a linear system that our planet cannot sustain. There is a new way to think about our resources and our environment and economy – a sustainable economy. In a sustainable or circular economy the valuable resources continue to be reused. This is much better for our environment and our future. AFTeR members support this sustainable approach, and in doing so we help divert textiles out of the landfill. So please help us DIVERT, DONATE and DO GOOD. With your support we can go a long way in developing a sustainable solution.

We all will win!

Think Twice!

Think Twice!

So many of us want to do whatever we can to improve the state of our planet but unfortunately there are still many who don’t think twice.

The fast fashion industry which has grown to a $96 billion-dollar industry has had a huge influence on society.  Many of us now wear clothing for a few seasons and then dispose of it, ready to follow the new trend. And of course our tastes, our bodies and our needs change.

Currently, AFTeR members help divert 8,000 tones of textiles away from landfill and into reuse every year. We want more of those textiles and it can happen with your help!   So, what do you do with your out of date fashion items? The jeans that don’t fit quite right? The jacket you’re tired of…

Much of our clothing is made from polyester or a combination of mixed fibres. Polyester is a petroleum product and doesn’t biodegrade. Yes, just like those plastic bags we are trying to get rid of!

Have you ever seen a Nova Scotian landfill? 38,000 tones of our waste textiles go into landfill every year. Much of the textile waste in Nova Scotian landfills can be reused or recycled.

So please think twice, don’t throw out your clothes and household textiles, someone can use these. And when you donate the textiles, it doesn’t go into landfill!

Donate it to AFTeR members (see our donate page) and we will make good use of the textiles you no longer use while funding critical programs for Nova Scotians in need.
